See & Do

Experiences like no other

Adventure, Fun, and a Wealth of Culture

Here's a little secret: about 90% of people who visit the Iya Valley and Oboke Gorge area are day-trippers. They come in on a tour bus, see the vine bridge, maybe ride through Oboke via a river boat or raft, have some soba noodles, and then move on to elsewhere. What this means is that the overwhelming majority of sights and experiences that this region is overflowing with are relatively devoid of crowds and offer a chance to connect with local people while having a slew of one-of-a-kind experiences, making it a traveler's paradise for those wise enough to give the area the time it deserves.

Yes, a decent bit of time is what you will need to properly explore and enjoy this legendary hidden region. The amount of activities and sights are extensive, and there are lots of things to interest and excite just about every type of person. However, many of the things to see and do can be a bit far apart, so again, even opting to stay one or two nights may not be enough.

Off the beaten path? Heck, many of the best and most rewarding spots here are literally only accessable by paths! So come on in and see what we mean...

The Top 5

Don't miss out with all that's on offer!

These are our ways to do it right in the Iya Valley and Oboke Gorge Areas!

Vine Bridges & More

At one point in time, the Iya Valley was home to as many as thirteen vine bridges. Today only three of these amazing creations are still around: the famed and more easily accessed Iya-no-Kazurabashi in Nishi-Iya, and the secluded and otherworldly Double Vine Bridges of Oku-Iya. Any of the bridges will make your heart pulse, with the creeking vines swaying as you cross, and the rushing emerald waters of the Iya River below.
Legends say that when the fugitive Heike Samurai came to the Iya Valley 800 years ago to hide, they built these vine bridges so that if any of their enemies ever found them, they could cut away the vines and have a chance to escape. Though that make for a good legend, the bridges also served another purpose (other than crossing the river): in order to walk across the older, less stable versions of vine bridges, one needed to be familiar with how the bridge swayed or else it was a bit tricky. So when seeing someone having trouble on the bridge, even from rather far away, local residents were alerted that an outsider was coming.
Aside from the famed vine bridges, Miyoshi has lots of other spans that offer fantastic views and even more of an adrenaline rush. Foot bridge enthusiasts come from across Japan to cross the daringly high Rygugake Wire Bridge in Oku-Iya's Manpu Gorge, as well as the Kunimasa Bridge and Akagawa Bridge which span Koboke Gorge. And up in Ikeda, the Shikinoue Bridge is the longest footbridge in Shikoku at 195m. And for those wanting to pull themselves across the river, be sure to get a thrill on the Yaen "Monkey" Cart beside the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridges

Rafting & Canyoning

The Yoshino River, as it blasts through the Oboke and Koboke Gorges, is renowned for its thriling white-waters. Home to the 2017 World Rafting Championship, adventurers come from across the globe to experience the heart-stopping Class 3 and Class 4 rapids. There are lots of fantastic rafting guides and outfitters who offer fun-filled full-day and half-day tours. No experience is necessary to enjoy, and it's both great for groups or as a way to meet new people. There is no better way to experience the mighty gorges, and many rafting companies also offer canyoning water-sliding tours as well. The rafting season starts in late March and continues to early November, though an occassional typhoon may close the river for a couple days in the summer or autumn.

Hiking

The mountains surrounding the Iya Valley are acclaimed for their excellent trails and some of the best hiking in western Japan. Most hikers make their way directly to the famed Mt. Tsurugi and even though it is quite stunning there are lots of hiking and walking trails that are arguably prettier and offer tranquil isolation, not just in Oku-Iya, but also Nishi-Iya, Oboke & Koboke and even up in Ikeda. Our Hiking Portal Page gives the most extensive area info available for planning an awesome excursion. Half-day, full-day, and multi-day hikes offer majestic views and quiet trails, while various mountain huts (some free) offer lodging as well as chances to see beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Outdoor Fun

Aside from rafting and hiking, there are lots of other ways to enjoy the outdoors in Iya and Oboke. If wanting to enjoy the river without the rapids blasting in your face, consider the Oboke Gorge boat ride or even just splash about in the emrald waters at a park along the Iya River. And for those not looking to strain themselves on a hike, there are two monorails that climb up the mountainsides, including the Oku-Iya Monorail which at 5km is the wold's longest of this type. And if needing a shot of adrenaline, opt to either zip-line across the Iya River or swing from the trees in one of the adventure rope courses.
Open the for Outdoor Fun.

Hot Springs

The Iya Valley and the Oboke Gorge area are home to a range of hot spring baths (onsen) where one can easily soak away all that ails them. Nearly all of the hot springs are connected to hotels, and even though staying at the hotel is probably the best way to enjoy their baths, one does not need to be an overnight guest to indulge, since most locations open their baths to the public for day use for a small fee.
No two locations are alike, whereas all baths have their own charater and offer their own range of indoor and outdoor pools, with some that overlook rivers and others with views unto the mountains. Men's and womens baths are separate, though at some hotels, overnight guests can opt to choose a room with their own private tub on the balcony for a more intimate experience.

Viewpoints & Nature

When visiting the area, one thing for certain is that nature makes itself known. While Iya's mountain peaks and the Oboke & Koboke Gorges are the most renown, there is a range of fantastic views on offer one does not need to hike to, and a wealth of other natural landmarks to enounter. The Shiozuka Highlands are a great place to enjoy high altitude views, as well as several other drivable mountain passes and viewpoints, many of which are great for seeing the magical unkai fog formations. Various parks like the tranquil Handa Iwa Rocks , the lush Kurozou Marshlands , and the picturesque Ryugugake Park highlight the unique beauty of the region in its various facets, while the views through the Iyakei Gorge along the old Iya Highway are simply breathtaking. And of course, seeing the various spring and summer flowers in bloom are enchanting, while the each autumn the dense forests explode with color.

Art & Weirdness

While the Peeing Boy of Iyakei Gorge may be the regions most famed sculpture, an assortment of different artwork and other oddities also make their home here. Oboke is known across Japan for its Yokai Monster Legends and  has a collection outdoor Yokai sculptures as well as the Yokai House museum. Other artists have also made their mark in Miyoshi, but perhaps the most bizarre is the Scarecrow Village at the deepest end of Oku-Iya, where a local artist decided to repopulate her dwindling neighborhood with hundreds of life-sized dolls.

Historical Sites

With over a thousand years of still living history, the Miyoshi region is full of interesting sites that have shaped the modern lifestyle. Several historic houses in the Iya Valley are open to explore, including the grand Bukeyashiki Kita-ke with its roots dating back to the ancient Heike Samurai. Oku-Iya's Ochiai Village is a National Preservation District due to its historic architecture (with many restored farmhouses available to stay in) along with its terraced fields and stone-lined footpaths. Also in Oku-Iya, the History Museum has great displays and lots of relics recounting the valley's history and legends. Up in Ikeda, the two huge mountain top temples (Unpen-ji and Hashikura-ji ) were established over 1200 years ago back when Budhism was first being established in Japan, while down in Central Ikeda, the old streets have a collection of historic architecture dating back to when the area prospered from the tobacco trade.

Festivals & Events

The Miyoshi area has a huge variety of festivals and events throughout the year. There are large summer festivals, sports events, lots of celebrations in honor of the unique local culture (from Yokai Monsters to Scarecrows), and several shrine and temple festivals with roots that go back centuries. In the Iya Valley the festivals tend to be smaller and more "local", though any visitor is whole-heartedly welcomed, so one should never be shy with going. Events tend to be bigger as one gets into Oboke & Koboke, and in Ikeda, celebrations like the Awa-Odori Dance and the Shikoku Sake Festival attract hundreds of people from across the region.
See what's happening on our Festival & Event Calendar page.

Classes & Tours

One of the best ways to connect with the people of the area is to have a hands-on experience. Learn how to make Iya's famed noodles yourself at a Soba Making Class , or satisfy your carnivorous cravings at a Wild Game Sausage Making Class. Active types can opt for an English spoken Yoga Lesson inside an old farmhouse, beside an ancient shrine, or atop a mountain. The Oboke Gorge Boat Tour is a pleasant cruise along the river, while a Special Bus Tour  from Ikeda goes to some main Iya and Oboke sights. Or have a more thorough experience with one of the many taxi tour packages, with some offering knowledgable English speaking local guides .
