Overlooking the small "downtown" section of Kawaguchi in the Yamashiro Town section of Miyoshi City, Yamaya is located within a nicely restored old wooden house upon a small hillside, with views of the Koboke mountains. The building has been in the owners' family for a few generations, and they now work together to manage and operate the place. Accordingly, guests are treated as if part of their family.

Easily reached by either public transportation (bus or train) or by car, there are two reasons to visit Yamaya: either to eat and drink at their well appointed cafe & bar, or to stay overnight at the adjoining guesthouse.

The all wood interior is done up with lots of beautiful antiques and the owners went out of their way to keep as much of the original builing intact as possible (look for the original exposed electrical lines strung up along the walls and ceilings). Seating is either at the wooden bar or at one of the tables, where even though the seating is upon the floor, there are cut out spaces beneath the tables which allow your legs to stretch out in comfort.

One can also eat or drink out front on their lovely terrace, with its mountain views and Mom's fabulous collection of potted plants and herbs (which of course, are used in the cafe meals.) Its especially nice to chill out there on warm summer evenings when its all lit up with lights.

Freshly made daily meal sets for are available for lunch, and there's a huge menu of food and drinks for dinner (see below). The guesthouse offers traditional-style sleeping in a large room beside the cafe (also see below).

Local Points
Yamaya is located within the small "downtown" section of  Kawaguchi  for the Yamashiro Town part of Miyoshi City, just off the northern end of Koboke. There are several shops along the main street here, including the small  Toyozaki Grocery Store.  The  post office & ATM  are just around the corner, while  Big Smile Rafting  is just across the street.
The  JR Awa-Kawaguchi Train Station  is an easy walk of about 200 meters away, with its  bus stop  connecting to Ikeda, Oboke, and the Iya Valley just in front.
Access by Car
By car, from the  Ikeda  direction, go south on Nat'l Rt 32, and just past the  Eneos Gas Station  turn right onto Rt 319. After a couple quick curves, turn right to go over the orange bridge just before  Furutani Grocery Shop.  After the bridge, either make the first left and park in front of the town office (small parking area), or make the first right and go down a narrow road for parking at a very large area near the river. To reach  Yamaya,  you need to walk up a set of stairs between the buildings across the street from  Big Smile Rafting.
If coming from the south via  Oboke,  take Nat'l Rt 32 north (about 15 min from Oboke) and turn left onto Rt 319 just before the  Eneos Gas Station.
Access by Bus or Train
Yamaya is pretty convenient for public transport. Buses connect the nearby  Kawaguchi Station Bus Stop  with several buses a day to Ikeda, Oboke and the Iya Valley. Being that this stop is the central hub for Yamashiro Town, both the Shikoku Kotsu Buses and the Local Miyoshi Municipal Buses for Yamashiro connect through here, giving plenty of bus options in every direction.
By train, the equally close  JR Awa-Kawaguchi Station  is along the JR Dosan Line, however only Local Trains stop here (not express trains).
To reach  Yamaya  from either the bus stop or train station, walk along the main street about 200 meters, and turn right up a set of stairs that go between a couple buildings just across the street from  Big Smile Rafting.
All of the food is freshly prepared at Yamaya, and features locally produced ingredients, some of which they grow themselves. The menu is as big as it is diverse, including Japanese, Western, Asian, and other ethnic dishes featuring authentic tastes. And as far as drinks go, its best to come thirsty. One of the sons is a skilled bartender who can make just about any cocktail from their vast assortmant of liquor. They also feature a range of international beers and wines, as well as sake from across Japan. Cheers!
The guesthouse at Yamaya is mainly one large room that adjoins the cafe area (and a convenient staggering distance from the bar...). Usually only one set of guests is taken per stay, so you and/or your group will usually not be sharing the space with strangers. Sleeping is upon their traditional-style futons on the floor, and groups of up to 8 people are able to stay. They also have hot showers, modern toilets, and free WiFi, so no worries about stepping too far back in time!
