For the first time in 3 years the full range of Summer Festivals will be happening in the Iya Valley and Miyoshi City area!

July 22 - Nishi-Iya Summer FestivalList Item 1
Taking place at the Iya Fureai Park in central Nishi-Iya (same location as Forest Adventure) a variety of vendors will be on hand with a range of food and drinks. Sing with the locals up on the karaoke stage, win a prize in the big raffle, and watch the Awa-Odori dancers who come out after sunset. Then take in the firework display at the end. Things start at about 5pm.

July 25 - Ochiai Sansho Shrine Summer FestivalList Item 2
This traditional Shinto Shrine event is open to everyone, and takes place at the Sansho Shrine located in the center of historic Ochiai Village. Though not a huge event and simply held by the village residents, it is open to everyone. With drums, a procession, and blessing by the local priest, it takes place in the afternoon, usually about 2pm.

Aug 11 - Jindai Odori DanceList Item 3
This ancient "rain dance" is recognized as by UNESCO as a cultural asset. Taking place at a shrine high up on the mountain in central Nishi-Iya, people first gather below along the main road in the morning (about 8-9am) to put on their colorful costumes and first give a initial performance here, the at about 10am they all drive up to the shrine for the main dance.

Aug 12 - Oku-Iya Summer FestivalList Item 4
Held at the start of the Obon holiday period when Iya people living elsewhere return to visit their hometiown and families, this lively festival takes place at grounds of the middle school of Higashi-Iya (Oku-Iya). With food, drinks, singing, and other activities including a raffle with lots of prizes, the night is capped off with a rousing display of fireworks. Things get going at about 5pm.

Aug 14 - 16 Ikeda Awa-Odori
No need to deal with masses of sweaty crowds over in Tokushima City to take in Japan's most famous dance festival. This big (but not overly crowded) local festival of the Awa-Odori is held for three nights on the streets of downtown Ikeda, with lots of food and drink vendors. See the groups of dancers and drummers up close, and maybe join the fun of dancing yourself!
